Debra Barone’s Lemon Chicken

Retro TV Diner graphic

In the Everybody Loves Raymond episode “How They Met,” one simple dinner changes everything. Debra’s lemon chicken—bright, buttery, and just a little bit irresistible—wins Raymond over in a single bite.

Of course, longtime fans know the rest of the story. What begins as a swoon-worthy first meal eventually becomes a running joke—“Lemon chicken again?”—served on repeat at the Barone table. Which makes Raymond’s early declaration that he could eat it for the rest of his life feel less like romance and more like fate…with a sense of humor.

“I could eat this for the rest of my life!”

Ray Barone, moments before he did

It’s easy to see why Debra made this on repeat. With tender chicken, a silky lemon sauce, and just enough garlic to keep things interesting, this is the kind of recipe that feels both special and entirely doable on a weeknight.

Make it once, and you may find yourself agreeing with Raymond’s lovestruck declaration.

Debra Barone’s Lemon Chicken

Ingredients

  • 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts (pounded to even thickness or sliced horizontally)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (divided)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 2–3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1–2 Tbsp butter (for finishing the sauce)
  • Optional: lemon slices and chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep the chicken
Season both sides with salt, pepper, and half the garlic powder. Pound to an even thickness if needed—this helps it cook evenly and stay tender.
  2. Dredge
In a shallow dish, combine flour and Parmesan. Lightly coat each piece of chicken, shaking off excess.
  3. Cook the chicken
In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Cook chicken for about 4–5 minutes per side, until golden and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. Make the sauce
In the same pan, add minced garlic and cook briefly (about 30 seconds). Pour in chicken broth, lemon juice, and lemon zest, scraping up any browned bits.
  5. Finish
Stir in the remaining butter until the sauce is glossy. Return the chicken to the pan and spoon the sauce over the top. Let it simmer for a minute or two to bring everything together.
  6. Serve
Garnish with lemon slices or parsley if you like. Serve warm.

Serve with rice or a simple green salad—nothing fussy. The sauce does all the work.

Some recipes impress. Others linger. This one—like that first dinner between Debra and Raymond—manages to do both…whether you’re making it for the first time or the fiftieth.
