Our summer issue features not one, but two stories on Farrah Fawcett. Farrah seemed the perfect choice for summer because she was the ultimate golden girl of the 1970s. Her allure is difficult to explain, but watch one episode of the first season of Charlie’s Angels and you’ll get it immediately. The million-dollar smile, the sun-kissed skin, the hair. Oh, the hair!

We thought it would be fun to do an accompanying blog article exploring the Farrah Fawcett style and how to recreate it today. To that end, I, your fearless editor in chief, took it upon myself to choose an episode of Charlie’s Angels and deeply scrutinize Farrah’s wardrobe. This involved a great deal of pausing and screenshotting—tools that weren’t available when the show aired in the 1970s—but because I am so dedicated to my craft, I persevered.

One thing I immediately noticed about Charlie’s Angels, in retrospect, is that the wardrobe department apparently operated in a universe where seasons did not exist. You’ll see Kelly in a cropped halter top in the same scene as Sabrina wearing a turtleneck and blazer. In Season 1, Episode 5, “Target: Angels,” Farrah wears summer clothes in one scene and black leather boots in another.

For this roundup, we focused only on the sunny California-girl looks that made Farrah a style icon. The costume designers clearly understood what worked for her, choosing colors that showcased her golden skin and hazel-green eyes, and cuts that emphasized her already long, athletic frame.

We scoured Amazon to find the closest modern-day equivalents we could for the following clothes Farrah wears in this particular episode.

1. Orange V-Neck Tee

Definitely don’t try this color at home if you’re pale, but if you’ve got Farrah’s glow, flaunt it.

2. White Flared Jeans

All the jeans in this episode are flared. It was 1976. And Farrah looks amazing in every pair.

3. Vivid Blue Deep V-Neck Tank with Keyhole Cutout

You’ll notice that the wardrobe department felt there was no such thing as too much of a good thing when it came to showing more of Farrah’s skin. Why stop at a V-neck alone when you can add a keyhole as well? The version we found is less plunging, which is probably good unless you’re actually Farrah—or work in an office with an extremely loose dress code.

4. Delicate Silver and Turquoise Choker

Were Farrah’s eyes blue or green? The answer is green, but with certain makeup and clothing they could appear almost blue. A hint of turquoise near her face played up her beautiful coloring and made her eyes sparkle.

5. Straw Tote

The ultimate beach girl needs the ultimate beach bag. Farrah’s was big enough to, presumably, hold a lot of hairspray.

6. Baby Blue Tennis Shirt

They don’t make lapels like they did in the ’70s, but we did our best. And again, Farrah’s deep V is indeed deep, while this version is less so.

7. Horizontal Striped Long-Sleeved Tee

green striped shirt, long sleeve

Farrah definitely did not have to worry about horizontal stripes making her look wide. Her shirt had a cute pocket with darker stitching around it, but this version is close, especially with the darker band at the neck. It’s hard to tell whether her top was gray or green, but we’ll guess the costume department went with green to play up her beautiful eye color.

8. White Gym Shorts with Three Red Stripes

short shorts like Farrah's

This is classic ’70s athletic wear. Farrah’s version had a V-notch on the sides, but otherwise these are the real deal. We can neither guarantee nor manufacture Farrah Fawcett’s legs, unfortunately.

9. White Ribbed Tank

A simple white tank may not sound revolutionary, but on Farrah it became part of the effortless, sun-kissed aesthetic that made her famous. Sometimes confidence is the best accessory.

10. White Barrettes

Hey, sometimes a girl’s gotta keep the hair that made her a legend off her face. Farrah wore these while coaching a girls’ basketball team on the show. Her sportiness and willingness to get sweaty were part of her appeal.

11. White Tennis Shoes

Classic white Tretorn tennis shoes with blue logo

It’s hard to tell which brand Farrah wore in this episode because she’s busy running from a gunman, but in photos from the era she frequently wore Nikes with a red stripe or Tretorns with a blue loop.

12. Patterned Shirt Hybrid

This clothing item Farrah wears in the episode manages so many things at once: it’s kind of like an apron, but quilted, with a pattern and a big front pocket. Unsurprisingly, we couldn’t find anything really close, but this one has a lot going on in a cool kind of way, and Farrah could’ve rocked it.

13. Flared Blue Jeans

This brand has more than 2,000 reviews with nearly five stars, and customers claim they make your booty look fantastic. We cannot independently verify that claim, but Farrah, who had legs for days, certainly made flared jeans look good.

14. White Shirt with Flared Collar

Collars in the 1970s were part fashion, part deadly weapon. This shirt had the biggest collar we could find.

15. Peekaboo Blouse

The costume designers also understood that a hint of skin can be more alluring than showing more. This blouse captures a similar playful spirit while retaining the easy glamour that made Farrah such a style icon.

Why Farrah Fawcett Style Still Works Today

Looking back at Charlie’s Angels, it’s easy to see why Farrah Fawcett became a style icon. Nearly fifty years later, Farrah Fawcett style remains surprisingly wearable. The clothes themselves weren’t especially complicated. In fact, many were surprisingly simple: flared jeans, fitted tanks, striped tees, gym shorts, and button-front shirts. What made them memorable was the way Farrah wore them.

The costume designers understood what worked for her. They chose colors that highlighted her golden coloring, silhouettes that emphasized her athletic frame, and just enough California-girl ease to make the whole thing look effortless.

Of course, having Farrah’s smile, hair, and natural charisma probably didn’t hurt either.
