A Brady Bunch-Inspired Dinner with a Retro Twist

Some television moments become part of pop culture forever for reasons no one could have predicted. In The Brady Bunch episode “The Personality Kid” (season 3, episode 6), Peter Brady becomes convinced he has no real personality of his own. In an attempt to stand out, he begins trying on a series of exaggerated new identities.
One of those personalities—a tough-talking movie gangster Peter sees on TV—gave sitcom history one of its most unexpectedly unforgettable food moments.
“Pork chops… and apple sauce.”
As Peter dramatically repeats the dinner menu to Carol and Alice in his exaggerated gangster voice, the line becomes far more famous than the meal itself. Decades later, fans of The Brady Bunch can still quote it instantly.
But while plain pork chops and applesauce may have worked for the Brady family table, we thought the idea deserved a tastier retro update.
This version turns the classic combination into tender pork chops simmered in a creamy apple cider sauce with just enough sweetness and tang to make the flavors feel cozy, comforting, and just a little elevated. A splash of sparkling apple cider gives the sauce an old-fashioned warmth that somehow feels perfectly at home in the Brady kitchen.
It’s nostalgic comfort food with a “Retro TV Diner” twist.
Peter Brady’s Pork Chops in Apple Sauce
Ingredients
- 4 boneless pork chops
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
For the Apple Sauce
- 1/2 cup Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple Cider
- 1/4 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Tiny pinch cinnamon
- Tiny pinch nutmeg
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Instructions
- Pat the pork chops dry and season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the pork chops for about 4–5 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add the sparkling apple cider, chicken broth, Dijon mustard, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the skillet. Stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Let the sauce simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly reduced and no longer fizzy.
- Lower the heat and stir in the heavy cream and apple cider vinegar. Simmer gently until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Return the pork chops to the skillet and spoon the sauce over the top before serving.
You can serve it with mashed potatoes, carrots, or—if you really want the full Brady family experience—a dramatic gangster impression at the dinner table.
